The Kansanga-Luzira Malaria Relief Initiative, supported by a Malaria Partners International Community Impact Grants, is addressing the urgent health needs of Kansanga and Luzira, where malaria disproportionately affects marginalized populations.
With Uganda ranking third globally in malaria cases, Kansanga’s refugee population, and Luzira’s communities experiencing high rates of malaria, this initiative seeks to reduce the disease’s burden through targeted interventions.
A needs assessment revealed alarming gaps: only one mosquito net per five individuals in surveyed households, with 56% of respondents not using them consistently. Nearly 90% of households reported malaria cases in the past year, compounded by economic hardships, limited healthcare access, and a lack of awareness about malaria prevention and treatment.
The Kansanga-Luzira Malaria Relief Initiative held the two-day medical camp on November 23–24, 2024, providing essential healthcare services to hundreds of residents in Kansanga and Luzira.
The medical camp was organized by the Rotaract Clubs of Hope Kansanga and Luzira. These Rotaractors worked in partnership with Kampala International University (KIU) Medical School and KCCA Hospital. This network of local support plays a vital role in addressing malaria and other health concerns in the communities.
Key Services Provided
The medical camp offered a wide range of free services, including:
- Malaria and HIV Testing: Residents accessed rapid testing services, allowing for early diagnosis and treatment.
- General Health Screenings: Participants were screened for health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
- Mosquito Net Distribution: Over 400 insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed to families, helping bridge the gap in protective resources.
- Health Education: Volunteers and health workers led discussions on malaria prevention, including the consistent use of mosquito nets and the importance of seeking early treatment.
Community-Centered Approach
The medical camp emphasized inclusivity and collaboration. Kansanga’s refugee community received culturally tailored services, while Luzira residents benefited from increased access to essential health resources. Local leaders, healthcare professionals, and Rotaract volunteers worked together to ensure that the camp addressed the specific needs identified in the project’s earlier community mapping exercise.
Sustained Impact
The medical camp was designed not just to deliver immediate services, but also to empower residents with knowledge and resources for long-term malaria prevention. By combining education, treatment, and collaboration, the camp reinforced the initiative’s goal of reducing malaria prevalence in high-risk communities. This 2-day event highlights the value of partnerships in improving access to healthcare and creating sustainable change.
The initiative comprises five activities, aimed at reducing these disparities:
- Community Mapping: Identify high-risk areas and built partnerships with local leaders.
- Training of Trainers (ToT): Equip future community health workers with malaria prevention skills.
- Education & Awareness: Conducte sensitization sessions tailored to local cultural and linguistic needs.
- Mosquito Net Distribution: Distribute 400 mosquito nets to underserved households.
- 2-Day Medical Camp: Provide community members with free health services.
